Ifan Devine and Luke Constantine have won the Junior BRC title in dramatic fashion on the Cambrian Rally finale.
The pair overturned a 14-second deficit on the penultimate stage into a 30-second advantage to snatch the crown over rival Ben McFall at the very last gasp.
“It was incredible. We thought we had missed out going into the last stage, as we wouldn’t be able to claw back 14 seconds,” said Ifan, our John Easson Award winner,
“When we got to the end, and the BRC media team told us we had won, it was so emotional I think we all burst into tears.”
Luke and Ifan had spent the day swapping seconds over the muddy gravel tracks of the North Wales forests with McFall.
But it looked to be all over when a puncture on their Opel Corsa4 on the penultimate stage left them with an almost-impossible 15 seconds to claw back.
However, McFall suffered a badly misted windscreen on their Fiesta Rally4, forcing them to stop mid-stage to clear it.
That left the way clear for Luke and Ifan to take victory on Ifan’s home event.
“It’s been a fantastic week, I was asked to sit in with Max McRae for a pre-event test which was an incredible experience, and then this. It feels like we’ve been in a Netflix documentary!
“We’ve worked so hard all year to achieve this, but I’m not sure it’s quite sunk in yet.
“Ten years ago, I went to watch the Cambrian Rally with my dad. Little did I know that a decade on I would be crowned British Junior Rally Champion co-driver.”
