Rob Cotton has been crowned BRC National Champion after a faultless drive on the Cambrian Rally finale.
Needing only to finish to secure the title, Rob and co-driver Richard Crozier did just that, bringing their Subaru Impreza home in 23rd place, well ahead of his rival Chris Richmond-Hand who were 51st.
“It was always my aim to win the National class from the start of the year, so it feels really good to have achieved that,” said the reigning John Easson Award winner.
“After doing the Scottish Championship last year, the BRC feels a real step-up. There are some very, very good drivers competing in it, so the benchmark you set yourself gets higher and higher.
“If you want to progress as a driver, you have to push yourself and get out of your comfort zone. It has certainly felt like that this year.”
Although there were no real dramas on the day for Rob and Richard, finding the right rhythm and pace without taking unnecessary risks was a delicate balancing act.
“In my head, I was trying to find a flow that worked without risking an off or mechanical problems,” he added.
“It was important to set a really good pace, we were inside the top 20 at one point, but we backed off towards the end to preserve the car.”
And Rob also paid tribute to the 2300 Club and the John Easson Award.
He said: “The BRC is the pinnacle of British Rallying and any aspiring young drivers want to be able to compete in it. Without the financial support given to me by the club through the JEA, I simply wouldn’t have been able to do it.
I cannot thank them enough for all their help this year.”
