Johnnie Mackay enjoyed a morale-boosting finish on last weekend’s Memorial Garden Stages.
The talented young Scotsman brought his Mitsubishi Evo7 home in second place after six stages at RM Condor, near Arbroath.
Johnnie and co-driver Michael Cruikshank finished the day just 44 seconds behind winner Greg Inglis and Charley Sayer-Payne in a Lotus Exige.
It was the perfect result for the reigning John Easson Award winner, after a run of bad luck, which culminated in a first stage retirement on this month’s Snowman Rally.
He said: “It was great day, and was exactly what we needed. We haven’t had much luck in recent events, even going back to last year with the ST.
“The car felt amazing and we got off to a great start when we clocked equal fastest time. I don’t think I’ve enjoyed an event as much for quite a while!”
“We did have one small gremlin, when the wipers wouldn’t switch off, but pulling the fuse out soon sorted that out.
“The venue is ideal for exploring the limit on a new car as there was so much run-off, and we learned a lot over the day, such as altering diff maps to adjust the handling.”
Johnnie will be back in Scottish Rally Championship action next month on the McDonald and Munro Speyside Stages, based in Elgin, on April 21-22
